Thanks To The Scotia Cinema!

Often kids with disabilities have a tough time at a movie theater. There are issues with crowds, noise and all sorts of stimuli that just make the experience unpleasant for the child and hard on the parents. Sometimes a child with a disability may act in ways that are different than other kids and that can draw attention and the whole scene becomes not worth the effort.

The Scotia Cinema, ( http://www.scotiacinema.net/ )a locally owned and operated movie theater, wanted to help the kids at Wildwood School enjoy themselves at the movies. The owners, Richard and Melissa Adams, invited a group of students to see the movie “Dolphin Tale” at a special private showing. The students were seated all over the theater including the balcony and some even took advantage of the open space at the front to calm themselves by moving around as the movie progressed.  The “based on a true story” plot of “Dolphin Tale” is about a dolphin (named “Winter”) who gets caught in a crab trap and becomes physically disabled. The boy who finds her helps to connect her with a Marine Rescue Hospital and a relationship grows between them and all the other people who work to help her.

In case  you are interested, you can see “Winter” and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium at http://www.seewinter.com/

What a great day and a great experience! And what great thanks we express to Richard and Melissa!

Governor Cuomo Signs Autism Health Insurance Bill

E-mail Print PDF

From the NYS Developmental Disability Planning Council

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently signed a law that will require health insurance providers to offer coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorder. The legislation will help families afford the expensive health care costs related to treating loved ones with autistic disorders. Under the new law, health insurance companies will be required to provide coverage for treatment of autism spectrum disorders, though coverage may be subject to deductibles, co-pays, and coinsurance consistent with those imposed on other benefits.

Thank you to everyone who participated in or supported the Walk for Wildwood!
Because of you we had another record breaking year!

The Walk raised just over $60,000 and we had 600 people register for the event (our largest group yet).
While every single person had an impact on this event I would like to highlight some of our top fundraisers.

Once again our top team was the Class 5 Rascals!! This team raised almost $6,000!! A huge thank you to all the staff and parents who made that happen.

We also had nine super star Walkers who raised over $1,000.  Those Walkers are:
